One Small Action Can Have a Domino Effect

Domino is a game piece that can be used to play a number of games. It has a wide range of uses, including building structures, creating patterns, and making designs.

We have all seen those domino constructions, where a line of thousands of dominoes is set up in careful sequence, and then one is tipped ever so slightly to begin the chain reaction that eventually brings them all down. It is a mesmerizing sight, and it demonstrates what we know to be true: one small action can have a huge impact.

In education, this same concept can be applied to student learning. Students with weak foundational skills often compensate for them by relying on other, more advanced strategies. This is helpful, but it can also cause problems. Compensating for a weak skill taxes the capacity of working memory, which can limit a student’s ability to learn. Over time, the compensation skill can reach its limits and begin to impact the underlying foundational skill, which will then start to fall.

Domino has been around since the mid-18th century and is most well-known in the West for its use in positional games. In these games, players place dominoes edge to edge against each other until the adjacent faces are identical (e.g., 5 to 5) or form some other specified total. Each player then chooses a domino and moves it to a location on the board, triggering the rest of the dominoes to be played.

When Hevesh first started her domino hobby at age 8, she began posting videos of her creations online. As she grew more experienced, her creations became increasingly complex, and at age 20, she had built enough of a reputation to become a professional domino builder. Hevesh’s work has been featured on the popular reality show The Amazing Race, and she has won several national competitions for her domino displays.

In addition to her professional endeavors, Hevesh has published a book and launched Domino, a magazine focused on home design. The title of the magazine comes from its premise that one simple change can have a domino effect. The Domino website features articles, podcasts, and videos with designers and influencers such as Bobby Berk, Justina Blakeney, and Jeremiah Brent.

Domino has also published a number of books, including its first in 2016, Domino: Your Guide to a Stylish Home. The publication has a robust social media presence and a large following on Instagram, where it shares photos of its favorite spaces. Domino also has verticals devoted to Travel, Wellness, and Weddings. In addition, it has launched a furniture collaboration with Crate & Barrel and a podcast called Design Time with hosts such as Ayesha Curry, Jeremiah Brent, and Bobby Berk. Its print version has appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. Domino has won numerous awards, including Hot Launch of the Year and Top Launch of the Industry. It is distributed through Conde Nast. In its first year, Domino earned two National Magazine Award nominations.
